How to Choose the Right Computer for You

Technology is an ever-changing landscape, which can make choosing the right computer somewhat difficult. The following information will help you choose a computer that fully meets your needs, without adding unnecessary cost for the things that you have no use for.

Personal Evaluation

The first step in choosing a new computer is to evaluate what you will be using it for the most. This means that you need to ask yourself some questions, and provide honest answers to make sure you make the best choice.

  • How do you plan on using your computer?
  • Are you only going to be using it for email and web surfing, or do you need something that will allow you to play games and perform numerous downloads?
  • Will you be the only user, or will the computer need to meet the needs of several different users?
  • Will you need programs that allow for office work and document creation?
  • Will you create images, videos, or audio files for uploading?

Once you have determined your basic needs as far as what you will need the computer to be capable of, you can move on to other important decisions to determine your needs.

Laptop or Desktop

Laptop vs Desktop Computer | EmbotecThis decision is a personal one, but each option provides its own benefits. If you want the freedom of using your computer anywhere, a laptop may be the best option. However, if you need a more powerful computer that is better equipped for gaming, downloads, and other high-power options, a desktop is a better option. Side note: It is possible to choose laptops that can handle gaming and streaming; however, these options also come with a much higher price tag than a regular desktop.

Define a Budget

You will need a clear-cut budget to choose the best computer for you. There are numerous options available, with basic laptops coming in under $200, and more advanced laptops and desktops that can push $2,000. Your budget will help you determine what you need to focus on in order to get a computer that provides the features you need, without adding tons of unnecessary ones.

Understand the Basic Parts

Computers have numerous components, but the two that absolutely have to be considered when purchasing is RAM and hard drive space.

  • Hard Drives – Hard drives store all of the information that is saved on your computer. Generally, you should opt for computers with larger hard drives, which is denoted by the term gigabytes (or GB). The higher this number, the better. Most computers offer at least 500GB, but there are also terabytes available as well.
  • RAM – This is another storage component, but it stores temporary files that allow programs to work faster. Lower RAM often results in crashes or slow running.

These are the steps in choosing the best computer for your needs. If you are ever unsure of the best options, be sure to ask – computer technicians or any I.T. guys would love to help you find the perfect fit.

You first have to decide between the wired vs. wireless versions of the mouse that you will be using for your computer. Now with a wireless mouse, you do have to take into consideration that you will have to charge the mouse, or invest in a mouse that takes AA or AAA batteries, which will need replacing every few months. Now this mouse does have a lot of advantages, there are the few that people don’t like. For example going to sit down to send an important, urgent email and the battery being dead. This can be frustrating.

Now there are other forms of the mouse on the market, whether you are comfortable with the traditional mouse or you want one that is in your hand, to help with arthritis and hand placement. These are called ergonomic computer mice. Which often times can be purchased with the ergonomic keyboards as well.

There is one last alternative, and these are trackballs, which are often times on the keyboard, in the middle. And they can be used when the mouse is hooked up as well, offering two options for navigating.

These are some of the untraditional forms of navigation that are available for your PC as well:
